Mixing and unmixing induced by active camphor particles

چکیده
In this experimental study, we report on the mixing properties of interfacial colloidal floaters (glass bubbles) by chemical and hydrodynamical currents generated self-propelled camphor disks swimming at air-water interface. Despite reaching a statistically stationary state for glass bubbles distribution, those always remain only partially mixed. This intermediate results from competition between (i) induced disordered motion many swimmers (ii) unmixing promoted cloud attached to each individual disk. Mixing/unmixing is characterized globally using standard deviation concentration spectra, but also more locally averaging field around swimmer. Besides demixing process, system develops "turbulent-like" with large-scale region, an inertial regime Batchelor region. We show that due Marangoni flow swimmers, associated compressible effects.

Mixing of diffusing particles.
We study how the order of N independent random walks in one dimension evolves with time. Our focus is statistical properties of the inversion number m, defined as the number of pairs that are out of sort with respect to the initial configuration. In the steady state, the distribution of the inversion number is Gaussian with the average ≃ N²/4 and the standard deviation σ ≃ N³/²/6. The survi...
متن کاملThe biological effects induced by high-charged and energy particles and its application in cancer therapy
The radiobiological effects of high atomic number and energy (HZE particles) ion beams are of interest for radioprotection in space and tumor radiotherapy. Space radiation mainly consists of heavy charged particles from protons to iron ions, which is distinct from common terrestrial forms of radiation. HZE particles pose a significant cancer risk to astronauts on prolonged space missions. With ...
متن کاملMixing-induced global modes in open active flow.
We describe how local mixing transforms a convectively unstable active field in an open flow into absolutely unstable. Presenting the mixing region as one with a locally enhanced effective diffusion allows us to find the linear transition point to an unstable global mode analytically. We derive the critical exponent that characterizes weakly nonlinear regimes beyond the instability threshold an...
متن کاملWetting Transitions Displayed by Persistent Active Particles.
A lattice model for active matter is studied numerically, showing that it displays wetting transitions between three distinctive phases when in contact with an impenetrable wall. The particles in the model move persistently, tumbling with a small rate α, and interact via exclusion volume only. When increasing the tumbling rates α, the system transits from total wetting to partial wetting and un...
متن کاملRatchet transport powered by chiral active particles
We numerically investigate the ratchet transport of mixtures of active and passive particles in a transversal asymmetric channel. A big passive particle is immersed in a 'sea' of active particles. Due to the chirality of active particles, the longitudinal directed transport is induced by the transversal asymmetry. For the active particles, the chirality completely determines the direction of th...
